Course overview

This accredited course is intended for people living in the UK who do not have English as a first language.  There will be an opportunity to work towards qualifications in Speaking and Listening, Reading and Writing.  Qualifications are offered between entry level and advanced levels up to level 2.

Study will be active and relevant to life and work in the UK.

**If you register your interest on this course you will then be contacted by a member of the team if a place becomes available. Please do not attend the information session or the course unless a member of staff has confirmed this with you.

Session details

You must attend the information and enrolment session to enrol on this course.

At the information session you will complete a short assessment and if appropriate will be allocated to a course at a suitable level which may be on a different day and/or at a different venue.

Please bring any Maths or English certificates you have to the first session.

** You will be contacted if there is a place available on the course.  Please do not attend the information session unless we contact you.

Eligibility criteria

Learners must be aged 19 or over to be eligible for this course. The tutor will provide more information on eligibility to enrol on the course at the Information Session. 

The course is free if you are:

  • Unemployed
  • or you are employed and earn less than £16,009.50 annual gross salary

You will need to provide evidence of your income if you are employed and believe you are entitled to a free course. This could be a pay slip or contract of employment.

If you are employed, and earn more than £16,009.50 the course is part funded by the government and you will be required to make a contribution of £40.  We also operate a fee remission policy, so if you earn more than £16,009.50 per year but still cannot afford to pay for course you can apply for support. This may mean you get the course for free. Please contact us if you would like to make an application.

Venue and accessibility

The Leegate Centre is the new name for Leegomery Community Centre and situated close to the local shops in Leegomery shopping area.

Access to the building is via the cafe and there is a lift facility to upstairs floors. Free car parking is available near to the venue.

After the course

Learners who want to progress in their ESOL studies, can work through the qualification levels up to ESOL Level 2.

Once they have achieved ESOL Level 2, learners will have the opportunity to continue their learning in Functional Skills English and Maths from Entry Level 2, Entry Level 3, Level 1 and Level 2.

There is also an opportunity to practice your communication skills at the English Café at the University Centre Telford and to progress onto an IELTS preparation course which the University offer during the year.  Please contact the University Centre Telford for further information.
