You will study a number of modules focusing on teaching and learning theory, current developments in education as well as supporting children through crucial aspects of their physical and mental development. Understanding assessment, target setting and how progress is made will also be a key part of your learning. You will have the opportunity to take specialist modules in your chosen area of education whilst gaining vital study skills preparing you for academic learning at university.

Crucially, you will begin your course by following a core of units that ease you into level 3 work and begin the preparations for academic study. You will also undertake key units in Academic writing to prepare your for the academic nature of your Access diploma. Research into applying to university as your course gathers pace will also be supported by your tutor as you are encouraged to devise and refine your UCAS application.

Although not essential, it is highly recommended that you gather experience of working with children alongside studying for this qualification. This may be through volunteering, working in the sector or your own experience as a parent.

Session details

Typically, you will have one session per week with your tutor alongside 10 hours per week of guided online study. Your tutor will set study targets each week for your online learning and will incorporate tutorials into your weekly classroom based sessions. You must be able to dedicate a minimum of 15 hours per week of active study to your course. When you decide to do your online learning is flexible and up to you but you will be required to attend the classroom based session each week. Classroom sessions will complement the teaching and learning materials that will be made available to you via online learning. All assessments and assignments will take place and be submitted via the online portal with access given to you, your tutor and external moderators.

Eligibility criteria

You will need at least GCSE A-C/ Grade 5 or above or Level 2 equivalent in English Language to apply plus at least a Level 1 qualification in maths and science. If you wish to pursue a teaching degree you will be expected to have a Level 2 qualification in maths and science as a passion for learning and the desire to achieve your goal. If you do not have the necessary GCSE qualifications, but feel you can demonstrate skills at that level, please make this clear in your application. You will undertake a pre-course online assessment module prior to being offered a place to demonstrate your suitability for the course.

You will need to be able to dedicate a minimum of 15 hours per week study to the programme, 5 of which will be classroom based.

Once you have applied and have successfully completed the online assessment you will be informed of how to pay for your course. Your attendance on the course is only secure once payment is in place.

Bishton Court is situated in the new Station Quarter area next to The Quad building. The address is:

Bishton Court is wheelchair accessible and is situated on the ground floor, wheelchair accessible toilets are also available.

Public transport

Bishton Court is only a short walk away from Telford bus station by walking through the shopping centre towards Aldi car park.  You then need to cross the road and walk through The Station Quarter and we are situated on the corner by The Quad building.  We are also only a short walk from Telford Train Station over the bridge. 

Various parking is available at the town centre at a charge.  There is no parking onsite at Bishton Court.
