Course overview

The course is intended for those who are preparing work with children and also valuable in helping parents support their own children to learn.

The course is intended for those who are preparing to progress to working with children in a school as a teaching assistant, seeking work as a lunch-time supervisor or who plan to volunteer in a school.

At the end of the course learners will know more about:

  • Approaches and methods used in school to support reading, writing and number
  • Design of materials and resources to support development of literacy and numeracy skills

Learners will study units in:

  • Working with your child to develop literacy skills
  • Working with your child to develop numeracy skills

By successfully completing this course you will gain a Level 1 Award in Employability and Development Skills (AIM Qualifications).

If you have already achieved the qualification Supporting Children's Learning (Level 1 Award), you will not be eligible to join this course.

Assessment is completed via portfolio work.
Learners will need to be able to attend at least 80% of the sessions to complete the portfolio and individual tutorials will be offered during the course.

The course is taught in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere with an experienced tutor, and there is opportunity to meet and socialise with other in the group in a friendly, relaxed environment.

Learners with any special needs can discuss these with the tutor at the information session to ensure that the course is suitable or can be adapted for their needs.

After you have registered your interest, please check your emails or spam folder for an acknowledgement email from us and a link to complete an application form before course starts.

 

You will be contacted before the start of the course with further details.

Please bring a form of ID with you to the first session.

Eligibility criteria

The course is free if you are:

  • Unemployed
  • or you are employed and earn less than £25,000 annual gross salary

You will need to provide evidence of your income if you are employed and believe you are entitled to a free course. This could be a pay slip or contract of employment.
If you are employed, the course is part funded by the government but you will be required to make a contribution of £180.

We also operate a fee remission policy, so if you earn more than £25,000 per year but still cannot afford to pay for course you can apply for support. This may mean you get the course for free.

Learners must be aged 19 or over from 1st August 2024.

Unfortunately you will not be eligible to enrol on this course if you live in Wolverhampton, Walsall, Sandwell, Dudley, Solihull or Birmingham.

Venue and accessibility

The Wakes

 

Oakengates Town Council’s community venue is called The Wakes. It is situated in Oakengates town centre in Market Square.

The Outpost Cafe is also situated in the building with a lift and disabled toilets. A variety of Oakengates’ local shops and cafés are nearby.

The building is wheel-chair accessible with a lift and steps available on entry to take visitors up to the café and training rooms.

Free parking is available nearby at Telford Theatre Car Park.

What to Do Next

At the end of the session the tutor will advise you on further learning opportunities. You can search for more courses on Learn Telford which we regularly update with details of new courses throughout the year.

Learners can also progress onto other child related courses including Child Development Level 1 & 2, Supporting Children's Learning Level 1 &2, Dyslexia Awareness Level 2.

For learners looking for work or who want a change in career, we can offer you advice to guide you in the right direction and opportunities to gain qualifications in English and maths in Functional Skills up to Level 2.
