Course overview

On this course, you will explore Sashiko, a Japanese embroidery craft, and combined with experimental stitching skills, you will develop new skills to create decorative hand stitching and textiles artwork. At the end of the course, you will produce some beautifully decorated pieces of craft and art work to give as gifts for special occasions or for your home. You will also learn some enterprise skills and contribute to a project to make and sell craft pieces.

This Level 2 accredited course is intended for learners who have completed the Level 1 Award in Craft and Enterprise or have other previous craft experience up to Level 1 and want to continue their learning by progressing to a Level 2 Award.

During the course you will learn:

  • what is Sashiko craft making
  • how to use tools and equipment in Sashiko craft making
  • explore traditional Sashiko decorative stitches and visible mending techniques
  • use applique methods to enhance and create contemporary designs 
  • experiment with recycled materials and understand about sustainability in clothing
  • develop hand sewing techniques that can be then used to mend everyday textiles such as jeans etc.
  • produce a sketchbook with photos and drawings of your creative ideas to develop into a craft or artwork
  • plan craft projects from start to finish
  • have an opportunity to take part in an enterprise project to understand how to sell your craft

You will produce a portfolio of art work and written work towards the Level 2 Award in Craft and Enterprise (AIM Qualification) and be able to attend at least 80% of the teaching sessions to do this.

If you have already achieved the qualification from Open College Network West Midlands Level 2 Award in Craft Design or Craft and Enterprise you will not be eligible to join this course.

Learners will study two units:

  • Craft Design Project
  • Enterprise in Craft

Course sessions are in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere with an experienced tutor.

All resources required for the course will be provided and you will have opportunity to personalise your art using your own materials.

Learners with any special needs can discuss these with the tutor at enrolment to ensure that the course is suitable or can be adapted for their needs.

Please bring a form of ID with you to the first session.

Eligibility criteria

You should have already completed a Level 1 Award in Craft Design, Craft and Enterprise or similar qualification to be eligible to enrol of this course.  

The course is free if you are:

  • Unemployed
  • or you are employed and earn less than £25,000 annual gross salary

You will need to provide evidence of your income if you are employed and believe you are entitled to a free course. This could be a pay slip or contract of employment.
If you are employed, the course is part funded by the government but you will be required to make a contribution of £189.

We also operate a fee remission policy, so if you earn more than £25,000 per year but still cannot afford to pay for course you can apply for support. This may mean you get the course for free.  Please contact us if you would like to make an application.

Learners must be aged 19 or over from 1st August 2024

Unfortunately you will not be eligible to enrol on this course if you live in Wolverhampton, Walsall, Sandwell, Dudley, Solihull or Birmingham.
