This accredited course is intended as a first step for people who want to volunteer or are interested to work as a Mentor.

During the course, you will understand about:

• the role of the mentor
• the importance of confidentiality in a mentor/mentee relationship
• to recognise and employ relevant skills and qualities to fulfil a mentor role

Learners will have an opportunity to gain a Level 1 Award in Mentoring Skills for Working with Young People (AIM Qualification). This course would also be suitable to support mentoring for adults and young people.

If you have already achieved the qualification from AIM Level 1 Award in Mentoring Skills for Working with Young People, you will not be eligible to join this course.

Assessment is completed via a work-book. There is no exam.
Learners will need to be able to attend at least 80% of the sessions to complete the work-book and individual tutorials will be offered during the course.

The course is taught in a relaxed and friendly atmosphere with an experienced tutor and there is opportunity to meet and socialise with others in the group in a friendly, relaxed environment.

Learners with any special needs can discuss these with the tutor at enrolment to ensure that the course is suitable or can be adapted for their needs.

As this is an accredited level 1 course, at the start of the session the tutor will ask you to complete a short assessment to ensure that the course is appropriate for you. Due to the course content, you will need a sufficient understanding of English to complete this qualification.

We understand it can be difficult for you to take the first steps and try something new so, on the first day of the course our friendly tutor will talk to you about the course and offer some useful information and advice.

At the first session, if you have not done so already, your tutor will ask you to complete an application (enrolment) form.  Please bring a form of ID with you to the first session.

The course is free if you are:

• Unemployed
• or you are employed and earn less than £25,000 annual gross salary

You will need to provide evidence of your income if you are employed and believe you are entitled to a free course. This could be a pay slip or contract of employment.
If you are employed and earn more than £25,000 per year, the course is part funded by the government but you will be required to make a contribution of £42.

We also operate a fee remission policy, so if you earn more than £25,000 per year but still cannot afford to pay for course you can apply for support. This may mean you get the course for free.

Learners must be aged 19 or over from 1st August 2024.

Unfortunately you will not be eligible to enrol on this course if you live in Wolverhampton, Walsall, Sandwell, Dudley, Solihull or Birmingham.

All areas of Park Lane Centre are fully accessible. All first floor facilities can be accessed via a lift. There are 2 separate accessible WC located on both the ground floor and first floor.

Car Parking

There are sufficient car parking spaces available both to the front and rear of the Centre.
