This accredited course provides an opportunity to work towards a City and Guilds Award in English Skills up to Level 1.

If you haven't attended one of our functional skills courses before you will be asked to undertake a short skills assessment to help us advise you on an appropriate course.
Please bring with you, any certificates or evidence of qualifications you already have for Maths or English.
The English Skills Awards are portfolio based you would complete a work book of assessments throughout the course to gain an Award in Writing, Reading or Speaking and Listening. There is no exam.
Our English, Maths and ESOL courses are offered across Telford in community venues. We run morning and afternoon sessions during school term time only.
Please bring with you, any certificates or evidence of qualifications you already have for Maths or English.
You may be offered a course on a different day or at a different level to the one you have registered for.
During the information and advice session, the tutor will explain more about our courses and the options available to you.
Please do not register your interest on more than one functional skills English or English Skills Awards course. Our tutors will help you to choose the course which is most appropriate for you at the information session.

We understand it can be difficult to take the first steps and try something new so, on the first day of the course, our friendly tutor will talk to you about the course and offer some useful information and advice.
If we cannot offer you a place on your preferred course, we may be able to offer a course at another of our community venues in Telford.
Learners must be aged 19 or over from 1st August 2025 to be eligible for this course. You are not eligible for this course if you have already achieved a Level 2 in English (that is an ‘O’ level grade C or above, CSE grade 1, GCSE grade C/4 or above, Functional Skills Level 2, Basic Skills or Skills for Life Level 2 or similar) unless a skills assessment confirms that your skills are not currently at that level.
If you already have an English or maths qualification and are unsure whether you are eligible to enrol onto a course, please come along to one of our information sessions and chat to the tutor who will check this with you.
Unfortunately, you will not be eligible to enrol on this course if you live in Wolverhampton, Walsall, Sandwell, Dudley, Solihull or Birmingham.
Hadley Community Centre is owned and managed by Hadley and Leegomery Parish Council.
The centre and toilets are wheelchair accessible and toilets include baby change facilities.
There isn’t a cafe on site but there are local shops nearby. Free car parking is available at the centre for users as well as free Wi-Fi. Please use the Centre and Tesco carparks, not the social club parking.

At the end of the course, the tutor will help and advise you on your next steps into further learning or work opportunities.
Learners who want to progress in their English studies can work through the levels up to Functional Skills English Level 2.
